WoW: Forever

Arcane Mage

Burst damage on a mana curve you have to manage. Arcane is genuinely new in Forever — in Classic its tree had nothing worth spending points on, and now it is a levelling spec.

Is Arcane worth levelling?

Yes, and this is the change most worth knowing about the class. The published heading is literally "A Solid Leveling Spec": "Arcane Mages in Forever level up very well… The Arcane Meditation talent significantly reduces downtime between fights… and Missile Barrage reduces the mana cost of Arcane Missiles by 100%." One source puts it level with Frost — "you should mainly pick between Arcane or Frost builds."

The reason it was not a spec in Classic is worth stating plainly: the Arcane tree had "no way to use [its talents] other than empowering Arcane Explosion and Arcane Missiles." Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage are both new.

The dungeon caveat is real: "if the tank is not good enough, you will pull aggro… the Arcane Mage cannot slow enemies as effectively as a Frost Mage (but still sufficient)."

Your talent points

There are separate solo and dungeon builds at both 20 and 30, and the difference is not cosmetic.

Level 20, solo — 11/0/0: Improved Channeling 1 → Arcane Focus 1→2 → Improved Channeling 2→3 → Arcane Concentration 1→5 → Arcane Blast.

Level 20, dungeon — 11/0/0: Arcane Focus 1→4 → Wand Specialization 1→2 → Arcane Subtlety 1→2 → Arcane Concentration 1→2 → Arcane Blast. The dungeon build trades sustain for hit (Arcane Focus) and threat reduction plus resistance shred (Arcane Subtlety).

A third published build opens Wand Specialization 2 → Arcane Focus 3 → Arcane Subtlety 2 → Arcane Concentration 3 → Arcane Blast, and takes Arcane Subtlety for its 15 spell resistance reduction rather than its threat cut. Its flex point is named: "the other 3 points either, to your preference, in Arcane Focus or Arcane Channeling."

Level 30, solo — 21/0/0: Improved Channeling 1→4 (10–13), Arcane Focus 1 (14), Arcane Concentration 1→5 (15–19), Arcane Blast at 20, Arcane Focus 2→3 (21–22), Arcane Impact 1→2 (23–24), Missile Barrage at 25, Arcane Meditation 1→3 (26–28), Improved Channeling 5/5 (29), Arcane Mind 1 (30).

Level 30, dungeon — 21/0/0, and note the consequence: front-loading Arcane Focus 5 and Arcane Subtlety 2 delays Arcane Blast to level 22. That is a deliberate trade, not an error.

Rotation

Missile Barrage only exists from 25, so the sequence changes at that level.

  1. Pull with Frostbolt so the enemy arrives slowed — and it can proc Missile Barrage
  2. Missile Barrage up → Arcane Missiles immediately. It is free and channels in half the time
  3. Otherwise Arcane Blast to 4 stacks maximum, then spend into Arcane Missiles
  4. A proc mid-sequence means spend it — "do not cast another Arcane Blast, as the mana cost drastically increases with each cast"
  5. Moving: Fire Blast, a Presence of Mind-instant Arcane Blast, or wand
  6. Arcane Concentration procs go on Arcane Blast, which is the most expensive thing you cast

The one misconception to clear up: Arcane Blast does not increase its own damage. Each cast empowers the next different spell. And "building a bigger bonus is wasted if you cannot afford the spell meant to spend it."

Multi-target. Tanked: spam Arcane Explosion — highest dungeon damage and highest threat, so wait for the tank. Solo: gather, Frost Nova, Flamestrike plus Cone of Cold, kite with Arcane Explosion. Spend a leftover Arcane Blast stack on the first area cast.

Stat priority

Spell Power and Arcane spell power, then Hit, spell Haste, Intellect, critical strike, Spirit, MP5.

Intellect is unusually important here — "it directly interacts with how many times you can cast Arcane Blast." One source reorders to put Spirit third instead, and the reason is sound: "Spirit is a powerhouse… works while you cast, especially with Mage Armor and Arcane Meditation." Both orderings are defensible; the disagreement is about how much you lean on regeneration versus pool size.

What defines Arcane

TalentEarliest levelWhat it does
Arcane Blast20 (22 in the dungeon build)New. +10% to all your other spells per cast, +175% mana cost per cast, 4 stacks, 8 seconds or until you cast any other damage spell
Missile Barrage25New. 40% from Arcane Blast, 20% from Fireball or Frostbolt: next Arcane Missiles is half the channel and free
Arcane Meditation 3/32750% of mana regeneration continues while casting, up from Classic's 15%. One source calls the new value "astonishing"

What Forever changed for Arcane

  • Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage are both new. The published summary: "The former now finally grants Arcane Mage a main spell that it can rely on, while the latter introduces an RNG mechanic that empowers Arcane Missiles."
  • Arcane Meditation went from 15% to 50%. This is what makes Arcane a levelling spec.
  • Arcane Mind was rewritten — now +10% Intellect at 5/5 and +100% Arcane critical damage, where Classic gave flat maximum mana.
  • Arcane Impact (renamed from Improved Arcane Explosion) now buffs all Arcane spells' crit. Improved Channeling (renamed from Improved Arcane Missiles) now protects Arcane Blast too, 70% at 5/5.
  • Wand Specialization moved to tier 1. Arcane Focus was rewritten from resistance reduction to plain Arcane hit. Magic Absorption went from 5 ranks to 2. Improved Counterspell no longer rolls a chance — rank 1 always silences for 2 seconds and rank 2 for 4, where Classic gave a 50% chance at rank 1. At 2/2 it is unchanged.
  • Arcane Explosion was barely touched — rank 6 is 232–252, against Classic's 243–263.

At level 60

Unknown. The specific open question: whether Arcane Blast's +175%-per-stack mana curve is survivable with level-60 mana pools and raid buffs, or whether Arcane stays a burst and levelling spec. One source also notes "it is yet unknown how Haste will interact with Missile Barrage."
