WoW: Forever

Subtlety Rogue

Stealth openers and a Rupture-driven bleed cycle. The strongest PvP tree, the lowest-rated of the three overall, and it has no area damage of any kind.

Is Subtlety worth levelling?

Viable, and the lowest-rated Rogue spec overall — 2.5 out of 5, against 3.0 for the other two. All three are rated 4 out of 5 for levelling specifically. The heading is "Weakest Among Rogue Specs": "Subtlety gets the short end of the stick, with most of its higher-impact talents being unavailable until you can put more talent points into the tree."

Two blunt reasons, both worth knowing before you commit. "One of the biggest issues the spec has is its positional requirement… you won't be able to do so very often when leveling solo." And: "Subtlety has no AoE capabilities whatsoever."

It still scores 4 out of 5 for levelling on mobility and stealth grounds — you skip fights other classes have to win — and it does not come online until Ambush at level 18.

Your talent points

Level 20 — three published builds, and one of them is not a Subtlety build at all.

Pure Subtlety, version A: Opportunity 2 → Camouflage 3 → Improved Ambush 3 → Setup 2 → Ghostly Strike at 20.

Pure Subtlety, version B: Opportunity 2 → Camouflage 3 → Setup 3 → Improved Ambush 2 → Ghostly Strike at 20. Same five talents; the third point sits on Setup instead of Improved Ambush. Either is fine.

The hybrid, 2/2/7, and it is a genuinely different way to play: Remorseless Attacks 2 (Assassination) + Improved Sinister Strike 2 (Combat) + Opportunity 2, Camouflage 3, Improved Ambush 2 (Subtlety). Its intent: "you'll use Daggers and Ambush as an opener on every mob, followed by a weapon swap macro and Sinister Strike spam."

Level 30 — 0/0/21, in order: Opportunity 2 → Camouflage 3 → Setup 3 → Improved Ambush 3 → Ghostly Strike 1 → Initiative 3 → Serrated Blades 3 → Camouflage 5/5 → Hemorrhage at 30. A level-30 hybrid also exists at 6/2/13.

Rotation

  1. Open from Stealth with Ambush — this requires a dagger
  2. Weapon-swap macro to a slow main hand, or stay on the dagger
  3. Build with Backstab behind the target, otherwise Sinister Strike. Ghostly Strike is your non-positional builder — that is the point of it
  4. Slice and Dice on durable targets, Eviscerate otherwise. "Rupture is rarely used at lower levels."
  5. Dagger-only alternative: Gouge then Backstab — but wait for near-maximum energy first

From 30: Hemorrhage to build, then Rupture immediately on long fights.

Multi-target: none. "No AoE capabilities whatsoever." Said plainly because a table with a blank in it invites you to go looking.

Stat priority

Weapon damage favouring a slow main hand, then Hit and Expertise, Agility, attack power, critical strike, Strength.

This spec's list differs from the other two, and the published example is the clearest statement of why: "Between a 15 DPS weapon that has a 1.9 speed, and a 14 DPS weapon with a 2.8 speed, the 2.8 speed one will serve you better."

What defines Subtlety

Ghostly Strikeexactly 20125% weapon damage, 180% with a dagger, plus 15% dodge for 7 seconds. Non-positional

What Forever changed for Rogues

  • Hemorrhage is no longer a shared physical-damage debuff. It is now a personal Rupture amplifier — it does nothing for the rest of your group, so do not take a raid assignment on it.
  • Improved Ambush moved from row 3 to row 2, which is exactly why an 11-point Subtlety build can reach it at all. Setup moved from row 4 to row 2 and now hits 100% at rank 3. Premeditation moved from row 7 to row 4 and no longer needs Preparation.
  • Sap no longer requires Stealth and no longer breaks it — the first half is the larger change.
  • New: Dirty Tricks, Improved Distract, Quietus, Cutthroat, Thousand Cuts. Removed: Improved Sap, Sleight of Hand, Deadliness.
  • Poisons and Lockpicking are secondary skills now, not class skills, and poison stacks with a sharpening stone. Rogues can learn axes, starting at skill 1.
  • Hit and critical strike are unified across spell, melee and ranged.

At level 60

Unknown: whether the Thousand Cuts and Hemorrhage bleed cycle is a real raid specialisation. It needs 31 Subtlety points, and one source notes that Mutilate and Thousand Cuts cannot coexist inside a 51-point budget.
