WoW: Forever
Marksmanship Hunter
Ranged physical damage without leaning on the pet — and in Forever, the dungeon area-damage Hunter.
Is Marksmanship worth levelling?
Not as a general levelling spec at low level — and the published guide says so about its own build. Going 11 points deep into Marksmanship to reach Lone Wolf is described as "not a good general play build", with the direct recommendation to "use the Beast Mastery build at this level instead."
What it is for is dungeons. "If you want to go deep into Marksmanship, the best use-case for it is for Dungeons, specifically to maximize your AoE damage." An extra 20% damage on Multi-Shot is a lot in a pull.
So: Beast Mastery in the open world, Marksmanship if you are running dungeons. That is the whole decision, and it is not a close call in either direction.
Your talent points
Level 20 — 0/11/0, to reach Lone Wolf.
The sequence is eleven points into Marksmanship. What you are buying is the tier-3 talent at the end of it, so the intermediate points follow the tree rather than a preference.
The warning that comes with it is explicit: "At low level, you should never take Lone Wolf unless your goal is to maximize your cleave and AoE damage in dungeons."
If you are questing, spec Beast Mastery instead — Deadly Aspects 5 and Pathfinding 2, which the Beast Mastery page covers.
Rotation
Single target is identical to Beast Mastery's, because at this level the Hunter rotation is the Hunter rotation:
- Aspect of the Hawk up; Aspect of the Cheetah when kiting
- Hunter's Mark before the pull
- If you did not take
Lone Wolf, send the pet in first, abilities on auto-cast. WithLone Wolftalented you keep no pet out at all — it is a flat +20% for going without - Serpent Sting once the target is engaged
- Aimed Shot on cooldown
- Auto Shot as filler
- Disengage if you pull aggro; Arcane Shot only with mana to spare
Multi-target is where this spec earns its place: Multi-Shot instead of Aimed Shot, with Lone Wolf amplifying it.
Below level 10, walk backwards between shots to stay out of the dead zone.
Stat priority
Weapon damage, then Agility, then the highest item level you can wear. As with every Hunter spec, the slower weapon is better — Aimed Shot scales off damage per hit, not DPS. Hit is valuable but rarely appears on low-level gear.
What defines Marksmanship
| Talent | Earliest level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Lone Wolf | exactly 20 | +20% damage with all attacks — and only while you have no pet active. That trade, the tree's damage against your pet's damage and its ability to hold a target, is why it is a cleave pick and not a general one |
Lethal Attacks | 10 | The second-best early damage talent in the class, behind Focused Fire. Forever widened it from ranged-weapon crit to crit with all attacks |
Hawk Eye | 10 | Extra range — kiting, and PvP |
What Forever changed for Hunters
- Forever normalised pet attack speed, not pet damage — families still carry damage, armour and health modifiers (Raptor +10%, Boar −10%) — and pets inherit some of your stats. But see
Lone Wolfbelow: the eleven-deep build and a live pet are alternatives, not partners. Improved Serpent StingandImproved Scorpid Stingwere folded intoImproved Stings(Marksmanship, tier 2, 3 ranks), which keeps the +6% Serpent Sting damage and adds a Viper Sting cooldown cut. Build lists naming the old talents are stale.- The utility kit is unchanged and still the class's real advantage: Feign Death, Freezing Trap, Frost Trap, Concussive Shot, Disengage.
At level 60
Unknown, and the open question for this spec is specific: whether Lone Wolf remains a dungeon-only talent or becomes the single-target choice once deeper Marksmanship talents exist to support it.
