WoW: Forever

Survival Hunter

The durable Hunter — parry, a defensive cooldown, and traps that are genuinely hard to play against. It is not the damage spec and not the levelling spec.

Is Survival worth levelling?

No, if you want to level quickly. The published advice does not hedge: "At Level 20, you should not go Survival if all you care about is damage or leveling quickly" — go Beast Mastery or Marksmanship, which "both offer far better damage talents at low levels."

What Survival is actually good at right now is PvP. Deflection plus Deterrence gives you 10% base parry and an on-use defensive cooldown, which makes you "extremely strong in PvP against other melee" — the matchup a Hunter normally fears most. Add Entrapment and your traps become, in the source's words, "exceptionally more annoying to deal with."

Level Beast Mastery and respec to Survival when you want to duel. That is the honest recommendation.

Your talent points

Level 20 — 0/0/11, a durability build rather than a damage one.

  1. Deflection, 5 points — +10% base parry
  2. Entrapment, 3 points — every trap you own gets worse to be caught in
  3. Deterrence, and the remaining points toward it

There is no published level-20 Survival damage build, because no source recommends one.

Rotation

Ranged is correct at level 20 regardless of your talents. Say that first, because Survival's melee reputation misleads people.

  1. Aspect of the Hawk up; Aspect of the Cheetah when kiting
  2. Hunter's Mark before the pull
  3. Send the pet in first, abilities on auto-cast
  4. Serpent Sting once the pet has the target
  5. Aimed Shot on cooldown
  6. Auto Shot as filler
  7. Disengage if you pull aggro; Arcane Shot with spare mana

If you insist on melee, there is a published rotation for it, and it needs Aspect of the Beast rather than Hawk:

  1. Hunter's Mark, then send the pet
  2. Serpent Sting
  3. Close to melee and Raptor Strike on cooldown
  4. Disengage if you take the target off your pet

Below level 10, walk backwards between shots to stay out of the dead zone.

Stat priority

Weapon damage, then Agility, then item level — the same as the other two specs, and the slower weapon still wins because Aimed Shot scales off damage per hit. Agility does double duty here, since it feeds dodge alongside attack power.

What defines Survival

Talent or abilityEarliest levelWhat it does
Deflection 5/514+10% base parry. Parry is not a stat Hunters normally have
Deterrence20The on-use defensive cooldown, and half of the PvP case
Entrapment 3/515Every trap you trigger roots what it catches — 1 second per rank, so 3 seconds at the three points this build spends, 5 at full

What Forever changed for Hunters

  • Forever normalised pet attack speed, not pet damage — families still carry their own damage, armour and health modifiers (Raptor +10%, Boar −10%) — and pets inherit some of your stats.
  • Improved Serpent Sting and Improved Scorpid Sting were folded into Improved Stings (Marksmanship, tier 2, 3 ranks). Build lists naming the old talents cannot be entered as printed.
  • The utility kit — Feign Death, Freezing Trap, Frost Trap, Concussive Shot, Disengage — is intact, and Survival is the spec built around it.

At level 60

Unknown, and this is the spec with the most riding on it: whether Forever intends Survival as a melee Hunter, a trap-and-control Hunter, or a ranged spec with a defensive tree bolted on. Nothing published answers that.
