WoW: Forever

Protection Warrior

Shield tanking, and one of Forever's three tanks. The tree is now shield-gated — three separate talents check for one, which kills Classic's dual-wield threat build outright.

Is Protection worth levelling?

Slower solo, and the best of the three if you are running dungeons. The published assessment holds both halves at once: "extremely slow when it comes to solo leveling" and "takes less damage and can handle dangerous pulls more safely, which makes solo leveling more forgiving." Fewer kills per minute, far less time sitting down.

Worth knowing before you commit: a full Protection spec is not required to tank at low level.

Your talent points

Level 20 — 0/0/11. Two published builds agree on the first seven points and differ on the rest.

  1. Shield Specialization, 5 points — taken mainly for 5 rage on every block
  2. Improved Bloodrage, 2 points
  3. Then either Improved Thunder Clap 3 — more area threat — or Anticipation 3 for Defense
  4. Master of Defense, 1 point — a 50% chance of 5 rage on a dodge or parry

Level 30 — 0/0/21, reaching Vanguard: Shield Specialization 5, Anticipation 4, Improved Bloodrage 2, Master of Defense 2, Defiance 3, Improved Sunder Armor 3, Vanguard 1, Bastion 1. Concussion Blow is a strong alternative for that last point.

Rotation

  1. Battle Shout always up, Bloodrage between pulls
  2. Charge to open in Battle Stance, then swap straight back to Defensive — until you have Vanguard
  3. Demoralizing Shout on non-casters
  4. Victory Rush on proc
  5. Revenge on every block, dodge or parry — very cheap and a large amount of threat, so it is your best button
  6. Sunder Armor once or twice, spread evenly across targets

Multi-target is the payoff, and it is why the rage talents matter: with the recommended build you can afford far more Thunder Clap and Cleave than a Warrior otherwise could.

Differences from the damage specs: Revenge replaces Overpower, and Rend and Slam drop out entirely.

Stat priority

Weapon damage, Hit, Strength, Agility, Armor, Stamina, then crit — crit above Agility if you care only about threat.

A second published view weights it differently and is worth holding beside that one: armour and Stamina first, then Defense, and on the weapon the slowest swing wins, because Heroic Strike adds the same damage regardless of speed, so a slow one-hander is more threat for the same rage.

Hit now improves Taunt reliability, which is a Forever-specific reason to value it.

What defines Protection

TalentEarliest levelWhat it does
Shield Specializationmaxed by 14+5% block and a 100% chance of 5 rage on block. Classic gave 1 rage
Master of Defense20A 50% chance per rank of 5 rage on a dodge or parry with a shield, over two ranks. Both published level-20 builds are named after it
Vanguard25Charge usable in Defensive Stance — still not in combat
Shield Slam40The capstone, and heavily buffed — 421–439 against Classic's 225–235

What Forever changed for Protection

  • Thunder Clap is usable in Defensive Stance, and Improved Thunder Clap moved in from Arms with its rage reduction doubled. This is described as one of the largest improvements the spec received.
  • The tree is now shield-gated. Defiance, Bastion and Master of Defense all require a shield, which kills Classic's dual-wield threat setup. Defiance was also cut from 5 ranks to 3.
  • Three new talents: Master of Defense, Vanguard, and Focused Rage. Bastion replaces One-Handed Weapon Specialization at +10% damage with a shield equipped.
  • Improved Revenge no longer grants a stun — it gives +60% Revenge damage instead, and Concussion Blow carries the stun now.
  • Improved Taunt and Improved Shield Block are gone from the tree because both effects became baseline: Taunt's cooldown is 8 seconds without a point, and Shield Block blocks 2 attacks over 7 seconds where Classic blocked 1 over 5. You lose the talents and keep the effects.

At level 60

Unknown. Whether shield-only tanking holds up now that the threat talents are shield-gated is untested, and the published stat ordering is explicitly called a rough ranking that "will change largely depending on the gear you have available."
