WoW: Forever
Shadow Priest
"A vampiric DPS specialization, healing allies based on how much shadow damage they deal." This is the Priest levelling spec, and the published advice for the other two is to use these talents until you can heal in groups.
Is Shadow worth levelling?
Yes — and it is the highest-rated Priest spec for levelling at 3 out of 5, against Discipline's 2.5 and Holy's 2.0. It is also slower than it sounds early on, and the published reason is specific:
"Slow Starters, Better Later — In lower levels, Shadow has a complicated leveling curve. The spec is incredibly reliant on Spirit Tap for its mana regeneration. Failing to get last hits on enemies will generally lead you to drinking more often."
It gets better twice, at known levels. At 25, Vampiric Embrace lets Spirit Tap proc off the death of any enemy it has afflicted, not just your own killing blows. At 40, Shadowform's 50% mana cut improves it "drastically."
Learn one habit immediately: land the killing blow. Spirit Tap is your mana economy and it fires only when you kill something worth experience — grey mobs do not count.
Your talent points
Level 20 — three published builds, and they disagree about whether to take Mind Flay at all.
Build A, 2/2/7 — no Mind Flay, because 7 Shadow points cannot reach it:
Wand Specialization, 2 pointsSpirit Tap, 5 pointsImproved Shadow Word: Pain, 2 points- Final 2 points: "there aren't a lot of good options:
Twilight Focusif you find yourself playing mostly solo;Blackoutif you're playing in a PvP environment;Shadow Reach… for some extra range."
Build B, 0/0/11, also without Mind Flay: Shadow Focus 5 / Spirit Tap 5 / Shadow Affinity 1.
Build C, 0/0/11, which does take it: Spirit Tap 5 → Shadow Focus 5 → Mind Flay at 20.
A PvP variant takes it too: Shadow Focus 2 / Blackout 5 / Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2 / Shadow Reach 1 / Mind Flay 1.
Level 30 — 0/0/21, in order: Shadow Focus 5 → Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2 → Shadow Affinity 3 → Mind Flay → Improved Mind Flay 2 → Improved Mind Blast 2 → Shadow Weaving 3 → Vampiric Embrace → Improved Mind Blast to 4/5.
Rotation
- Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire up
- Power Word: Shield before you pull
- Smite to pull
- Mind Blast
- Shadow Word: Pain
- Wand until it dies. This is the single most important habit: "The main reason you'll die while playing as a Priest is running out of mana while still fighting against a healthy foe"
Mind Flay slots in as your channelled filler if your build bought it. The published rotation omits it because that build does not take it — not because it is bad.
Multi-target: "you can deal damage to multiple enemies by applying Shadow Word: Pain to multiple targets… this can be extremely mana-intensive, especially if you miss last hits to proc Spirit Tap." So: pain everything, then wand them down.
Stat priority
Spell Power, then critical strike, Hit, Intellect, Stamina, MP5.
Hit sits lower than you might expect while levelling, and the reason is stated: "While fighting enemies at your level, you'll need very little hit chance… Hit will take center stage when talking about endgame content."
What defines Shadow
| Talent | Earliest level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Mind Flay | 20, with 10 points in the tree | It is a talent now, not a trained spell. One point grants all 6 spell ranks |
| Vampiric Embrace | 25 | 30 seconds of your party healing for 20% of your Shadow damage — and it now also lets Spirit Tap proc off the deaths of afflicted enemies |
| Shadowform | 40 | +10% Shadow damage, −50% Shadow mana cost, +100% Shadow crit damage bonus, −15% physical damage taken |
What Forever changed for Priests
- Mind Flay is talent-only. The client is explicit: "Comes with the talent point, no trainer teaches it." It is gated on 10 points in Shadow Magic, not on your spec — so a Holy or Discipline Priest is not forbidden from dipping for it, but no published Holy or Discipline build reaches it, and their rotations contain no Mind Flay at all. In practice, healing Priests do not have it.
Shadow Weavingis now a personal stacking buff, not the raid-wide Shadow Vulnerability debuff. It no longer feeds other Shadow casters or Warlocks. Do not take a raid assignment on it.- Devouring Plague is no longer Undead-only — Dwarf, Human, Night Elf and Troll can learn it, and its cooldown dropped from 3 minutes to 1.
- Fear Ward is baseline for every Priest, but nerfed: 3 minutes' duration on a 3-minute cooldown, where Classic gave 10 minutes on 30 seconds.
- Shadow Word: Death is new — all races, level 32, so out of reach at any beta cap. Its talent
Early Demiseneeds 25 Shadow points. - Shadowform now bars healing spells rather than Holy spells, so Smite, Holy Fire and Resurrection are usable inside it.
- New race-locked Priest spells:
Divine Grace(Human),Chastise(Dwarf),Dark Sacrifice(Undead), andConfounding FlashplusContingency Planfor Gnome, which is a new Priest race. Wand Specializationis 2 ranks reaching 25% where Classic needed 5 — which is why every wand-levelling build front-loads it. Separately, wands no longer gain spell power as of September 24.
At level 60
Unknown, and the question is whether Shadow has a raid slot at all: losing the Shadow Vulnerability debuff role removes what it was for in Classic, its damage is single-target, and Vampiric Embrace heals only the party.
