WoW: Forever
Skinning
Leather off things you already killed — the cheapest profession in the game to carry, and its camp object gives your whole group 2% critical strike.
Is Skinning worth taking?
Yes if you already kill beasts; it is the weakest of the three as a pure money profession. Leather demand is narrower than ore or herbs.
It earns no Legacy Points. Only the six crafting professions do.
The real argument is Camp Chair at skill 20: 2% critical strike with spells and attacks for everyone sitting nearby — the same as Leader of the Pack's aura. That is a raid-wide crit buff off a gathering profession, and it matters most to a group with no Balance Druid. They do not stack.
The honest recommendation: take it on a class that kills beasts anyway — Hunter, Druid, Rogue — where it costs you almost nothing. As a standalone grind it is painful, because unlike Mining and Herbalism it has no craft to fall back on.
What it pairs with
Skinning with Leatherworking. Unchanged — and Leatherworking gained 271 new recipes, the largest count of any profession, so leather demand is up.
How the skill requirement works
Published explicitly, and it is not a node table — it keys off the beast's level:
- Skill 1 covers everything up to level 10
- Ten points per level from 11 to 20 — so a level-16 beast asks for 60
- Five times the level from there — so a level-40 beast asks for 200
Levelling it
| Your skill | Beast levels | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–10 | Mulgore, Durotar, Dun Morogh, Elwynn, Tirisfal, Teldrassil |
| 10–100 | 11–20 | Barrens, Darkshore, Silverpine, Loch Modan |
| 105–150 | 21–30 | Wetlands, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad, Thousand Needles |
| 155–200 | 31–40 | Dustwallow, Desolace, Stranglethorn, Badlands |
| 205–250 | 41–50 | Tanaris, Feralas, Hinterlands, Felwood |
| 255–300 | 51–60 | Winterspring, Azshara, Silithus, Eastern Plaguelands |
What Forever changed
- No new leather, hide or scale type is flagged as new in the skinning tables.
- Three camp objects, all new, and two of them do things no gathering profession has ever done:
| Skill | Object | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 | Camp Chair | 2% critical strike nearby — exclusive with Leader of the Pack |
| 140 | Field Guide | Blueprint. Grants Track Beasts to whoever reads it — a non-Hunter can have it |
| 300 | Trapper's Workbench | Blueprint. Holds one trap |
- Leather buys recipes through Waylaid Crates, the same as ore and herbs.
- There is no Skinning specialisation.
What is not known
Whether a Skinning Knife is still required — not published either way. The trap mechanic behind Trapper's Workbench is entirely undocumented: no source explains what traps are, where they come from or what they do. Skinnable creature lists and trainer requirements are unconfirmed.
